The early computer

The idea of the modern day computer was first said to be able to perform any conceivable mathematical computation represented as an algorithm. Mathematician and pioneering computer scientist, Alan Turing said the idea of the computer was to perform tasks capable of computing anything that is computable by executing a program stored on tape which would allow the machine to be programmed.


Computers were general purpose devices programmed to carry out arithmetic and logical operations automatically. They were designed to solve more than one kind of problem at a time. The basic computer consists of CPU (central processing unit) and some form of memory. The processor performs the arithmetic and logic operations while the sequencing and control unit can change the order of operations. An external device allows retrieval of the information where it can be saved.


Around the first century mechanical analog computers began to appear and were later used for astronomical calculations. During World War II the mechanical analog computer was used for specialized military operations. One particular application they were used for was to aim torpedoes. During this same time frame the electronic digital computer was developed. They started out being the size of a room and consumed as much energy as several hundred personal computers of today would use.


The modern computer is now designed on integrated circuits. my friend John from says that the computer today is billion of times more productive than the early computer and only takes up a fraction of the space. The computer of today is small enough to fit into mobile devices and is powered by very small batteries. When one looks at the computer of today they can still a remnant of the large sized computer of 20 years ago. The personal computer has remained a lot like the space-eating computer of before on the outside- a display monitor, keyboard and a “box” that holds the integral insides.



The birth of the laptop

In 1970, Alan Kay developed the Dynabook at Xerox in Paris and is considered to be the first portable computer. The first massed produced portable computer was the Osborne in 1981 and was very heavy compared to today’s portable computers. It was considered revolutionary; however as professionals were able to take their work and data anywhere


Reasons Why Your Computer is Slow

Working on a sluggish computer can be very frustrating. Each time you open a program, you will have to give it a couple of minutes to load. What users do not understand is that sometimes they are the reason for this behavior. Below are some of the reasons your computer may be slow.


It Has been On for Long

In today’s age, many software does not require you to reboot your computer before you can use them. However, you should not keep your laptop on all the time. A computer that has been on for long gets exhausted the same way you do at the end of a hard day’s job. Shutting down or rebooting your PC from time to time frees up its cache and RAM hence improving its performance. It also helps lower its temperature for optimal performance.

The amount of storage on your computer determines how fast it runs. Although technology has made it possible to own lots of storage, software is also getting large. If you have limited space, your programs will not have enough memory to run from and thus the computer become sluggish. Furthermore, many operating systems depend on virtual memory that is reserved from your hard drive for optimal performance. With a full hard drive, this memory will be limited or unavailable.



Malware Infection

There are many different kinds of malware and virus on the internet. Unfortunately, many computer owners still operate without an antivirus software. This creates an avenue for all sorts of malware to attack your computer. These viruses cause slow speeds in a number of ways. Some start background processes that consume a lot of memory while others hijack important system processes rendering your computer slow.


Hardware Issues

There are two ways your connected hardware can make your computer slow, through a hardware conflict or outdated drivers. A hardware conflict is an instances when two or more devices are going for the same resource. These conflicts normally affect resources such as memory addresses, and when it happens, all the devices trying to use the resource will be blocked leading to a slow PC. Hardware manufacturers keep on updating drivers for their hardware, and if your computer is connected to the internet, it is easy to install these updates. If you do not update the drivers, you will miss on important fixes that are meant to make the hardware perform even better.



Computers have fans to keep the temperatures within range. When the fan is not working optimally, your computer will certainly overheat. Overheating slows down some processes resulting in reduced performance. Furthermore, your PC will try and compensate for the heat by lowering the CPU speed so that it does not radiate a lot of heat. This in turn translates to a slow computer.


A computer that has been working quite well can get slow due to a number of reasons. However, if you keep rebooting it once in a while ensuring that its temperature remains within acceptable levels then you can eliminate this slowness.

Since the inauguration of the 21st century, the Internet and computers have evolved to become one of the most paramount aspects of our society today. And although the World Wide Web and computers are essential to the modern day individual, there is still a significant number of individuals who lack sufficient knowledge and competency into the capabilities these two innovations.

In fact by late 2014, the number of Internet users surpasses the 3 billion mark meaning that close to 44 percent of the world’s population gained access to the Internet.
